What services does Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice offer?
The support we give to families depends entirely on their needs. We support and care for children and young adults with a range of complex medical needs – all of our children have life shortening or life threatening conditions. We offer many services including respite, day care, support in the community, 24 hour urgent response and end of life treatment and care. Sibling support is also at the heart of our work; as well as counselling and bereavement services, hospice at home and support for our young adults.
What does it cost for families to stay at, or to use the services of, the hospice?
All of our services are completely free to families who are referred to Bluebell Wood.
Do you support children and families from a certain area?
Children and families across South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Lincolnshire can be referred to Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. We are currently supporting around 250 families across this region – both in our hospice and in the community.
How many children can stay at the hospice?
We have eight well equipped bedrooms for children and young adults, as well as accommodation for families. We also have two ‘end of life’ suites.
What is an end of life suite?
Our ‘end of life suites’ named Primrose and Forget-Me-Not are purpose built accommodation suites for families to stay in after their child has passed away. The child stays in a special room close to their family members. Families can stay with us until the funeral, giving family and friends the opportunity to visit at any time. Our staff are also on hand to help the family with any funeral arrangements.
What are respite breaks?
These are short breaks at our hospice which give families chance to recharge their batteries whilst being able to come and go from Bluebell Wood as they wish.
Do I need to stay with my child at the hospice?
If your child is coming to Bluebell Wood on their first stay, we would ask that a parent is present. This is so our Care Team can get to know your child. Following that, we are happy for parents to bring their children to stay with us independently, allowing some time for respite while we care for your child.
Can I stay with my child overnight?
We welcome families to stay at the hospice when their child is here. We provide double en-suite bedrooms for families to relax in and each of the children’s bedrooms has a sofa bed, so parents can stay in the same room as their child if they wish.
How much does it cost to run Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice?
It costs over £4 million a year to provide all of our services, more than 90% of which is raised through tremendous support from the community, corporate supporters and our nine shops.
Does the hospice receive any government funding?
We receive around 10% of our funding from government and statutory organisations.
How do I refer a child or young adult?
All referrals should be made directly to our Care Team Managers. They can be made by anybody connected with the child or young adult including doctors, relatives, health visitors, social workers, schools and paediatricians. Find out more about making a referral by clicking here.
