A mind-boggling mix of carts and riders entertained thousands of spectators at Bluebell Wood’s Soapbox Derby 2017.
Among those making storming runs over the bumps, jumps and chicanes at Clifton Park, Rotherham were Chapman Light Engineering who won the event in a combined time of just 76 seconds.
After all the incredible vehicles raced down the track, manned by fearless riders in crazy costumes, the team from the Bolsover, Chesterfield business lifted the trophy for hitting the fastest time over two runs of the track.
Clifton Community School and Axles of Awesome took joint second place with a time of 81 seconds, while dozens more intrepid teams experienced the thrills and spills of racing along in wacky soapboxes to raise funds for South Yorkshire’s only children’s hospice.
Eye catching designs cheered on by the crowd included bumble bees, rockets, carrots, spaceships and even Santa’s Sleigh. Although one car came a cropper, landing on its head, all participants emerged from the day fit and well and determined to do even better next year.
Jo Berry, Events Fundraiser, Bluebell Wood, said: “We’d like to say a huge thank you to all the teams and the crowds for helping to create an electric atmosphere at Clifton Park. It was fantastic to see so many amazing designs and every team deserves huge credit for going the extra mile to impress.
“We’d also like to thank our sponsors, Crystal Peaks Shopping Mall & Retail Park, Incentive FM Group, John Holland and JCT600 Ltd. We’re also really grateful to Clifton Park for hosting our Soapbox Derby for a second year. Every penny raised this year will help to make a big difference to families facing the toughest of times across the region.”
