A family supported by Bluebell Wood has helped to launch a new partnership with the Alhambra Shopping Centre in Barnsley.

Amelia Harrop-Rhodes and her mum Jenni were at the Alhambra to unveil Bluebell Wood as the centre’s Charity of the Year.

The Barnsley town centre mall, which has around 140,000 visitors a week, is planning a programme of fundraising events over the next 12 months.

Six-year-old Amelia, who visits Bluebell Wood for short breaks, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and spastic asymmetric quadriplegia at just a few weeks old.

Mum Jenni said: “Amelia has to have medicines and physiotherapy every day and wears leg splints. She’s a typical cheeky six-year-old, but it can be really tiring caring for her and having mummy-daughter time too.

Amelia Harrop-Rhodes at the Alhambra “The first time we visited Bluebell Wood I just felt calm. I could quite happily live there. I get to relax for a bit knowing Amelia is being looked after by a fantastic care team. She loves being at Bluebell Wood. She bakes, plays in the sensory room and soft play room. She loves all the dolls and being outside. It’s loads of fun for her.

“We were so pleased to find out that the Alhambra shopping centre has chosen Bluebell Wood as its charity of the year. This charity is there for families like ours, when we need them, and without them, our life would be much harder. They can only do what they do thanks to fundraising, so we hope everyone visiting the Alhambra this year will dig deep and give all their support to Bluebell Wood.”

John Tarrant, Alhambra Centre Manager, said: “As a shopping centre in the heart of Barnsley we are always looking for ways to give back to the community. We work with a charity every year and this year we chose to work with Bluebell Wood.

“We are delighted to be working with Bluebell Wood for 2018, having seen and heard of the amazing work they do for Barnsley residents.”
