Bluebell Wood support worker to tackle mountains

Working with families facing the toughest times of their lives has inspired Bluebell Wood community support worker Sherry to tackle the National Three Peaks.

Sherry will be climbing Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis mountains in July to raise as much as she can to help children and young adults with life-shortening and life-threatening conditions.

The National Three Peaks challenge sees hikers walk up the highest mountains in each of Wales, England and Scotland. It is usually done in less than 24 hours, and involves walking 23 miles, climbing 10,052 feet and driving a total distance of 462 miles.

Getting to know some of the 250 families supported by Bluebell Wood has helped Sherry understand the importance of fundraising for the children’s hospice, and made her determined to get as fit as she can to conquer the distance and climb.

Sherry said: “Because I work for Bluebell Wood and appreciate first-hand the support that everyone here gives families, I’m only too aware of why I’m doing this. It’s something I feel passionately about.

“I’m training with regular runs, before I start hill climbs in preparation for the National Three Peaks. I’m aiming to run 15 kilometres a week until May, then start hill walking in the Peak District after that.

“The hardest part of the challenge will probably be the intensity of doing all three peaks in 24 hours, but I’m sure doing it as a team will help us to all encourage each other. Having worked closely with Bluebell Wood families, I know how this charity makes all the difference. As we climb I hope that will help me to remember why I’m doing this.”

Ashley White, Events Fundraiser, Bluebell Wood, said: “The National Three Peaks, and the 12-hour Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge, are both amazing ways for anyone to get fit and make a big difference to Bluebell Wood. We’d love to see plenty of people take one of these Three Peaks challenges on and help us raise a record amount this year. Every penny will help us do more for families when they need it most, whether that’s music therapy, sibling support, counselling or end of life treatment and care.”

You can seal your place in hiking history and join Bluebell Wood’s National Three Peaks team on 7-9 July, or the Yorkshire Three Peaks team on Saturday 23 June, by emailing or calling 01909 517 365.
