Among the eye-catching sights for thousands of spectators at this year’s Bluebell Wood Soapbox Derby will be Matt Muffett and team mates taking on the tricky track in their soapbox, Ethan’s Rocket.
Ethan’s Rocket will be on the start line at Clifton Park, Rotherham on Saturday 30 September in memory of Matt and his wife Anna’s son. Ethan passed away at Bluebell Wood, three years ago this September, at just six days old, after being born with a heart defect.
Matt and team mates Chris, Dave and Steve are set to raise as much as they can for Bluebell Wood and to do Ethan’s memory proud. The crazy 500 metre downhill course gives daredevil teams the chance to tackle bumps, jumps and chicanes in their hand-built racing cars.
Matt said: “After Ethan was born, we moved from hospital to Bluebell Wood. When we arrived, we were made to feel at home straight away. We were
with Ethan day and night. We needed to make memories and hold him as much as we could, so we spent time with him in the sensory room, laid in bean bag chairs with soothing lights and gentle music. We read books to him and took him for strolls around the garden.
“It means a lot to me to be able to do something for Bluebell Wood, which helped us make those few days with Ethan so special. At last year’s Soapbox Derby we managed to raise over £1,000, which was fantastic. It really won’t be about winning but if we can edge a bit past our 20th place last year that would be a bonus!”
Bluebell Wood’s Events Organiser Jo Berry said: “Ethan’s Rocket sums up what the Soapbox Derby and Bluebell Wood are all about. Our events are great ways for people to get together to have fun and raise money to help families facing the toughest of times. We’re looking forward to seeing all the wacky creations on the track and hope as many people as possible will come along to help make it a day to remember.”
Last year’s event, which won the Best Use of Events award at the National Fundraising Awards 2017, was watched by 3,500 spectators and raised over £17,000 for the charity that supports children and young adults with life-threatening and life-shortening conditions.
All are welcome to come along to this year’s Bluebell Wood Soapbox Derby at Clifton Park, Rotherham, on Saturday 30 September, from 11am-3pm.
