After missing out on the winner’s podium last year by just a few seconds, the Worksop-based team has decided that the popular toy building bricks may give them a winning edge at Clifton Park, Rotherham on Saturday 30 September.
The Soapbox Derby sees daredevil teams tackle bumps, jumps and chicanes in hand-built racing cars on a 500 metre downhill course. Last year’s event was watched by 3,500 spectators and raised over £17,000 to help the children’s hospice support families going through the toughest of times.
Leanne Johnson from B&Q said: “Bluebell Wood was our charity of the year in 2016 and as soon as we saw the Soapbox Derby we knew we wanted to take part. It looked so much fun. Our engineer begged, borrowed and managed to get hold of an old golf buggy which was completely stripped down to build our Soapbox. We raced under the Transformers theme and came fourth out of 40 contestants, but only four seconds slower than the winner. We had a fantastic day out, but this year we also want to win.”
Led by Roberto Maccio, this year’s B&Q team will include employees Nathan, Sam, Chris and Ben racing in a Soapbox based on the Lego Racer Car.
Roberto said: “We decided to go for Lego because it’s so popular with children and adults. Our design this year will be lower, faster, lighter, and the winner. Last year we all made new friends and had great fun. It’s an excellent day out and more than anything it’s all for such a worthwhile cause.”
Bluebell Wood’s Events Organiser Jo Berry said: “We can’t wait to see the array of inventive vehicles on the track this year. We’re delighted that teams like B&Q are really going for it. It will be a fantastic day out for racers and spectators alike. There are still a few team places left so anyone who would like to take part should get in touch as soon as possible.”
Last year’s Soapbox Derby recently won Bluebell Wood the Best Use of Events award at the National Fundraising Awards 2017.
