Lizzie and Rob’s epic challenge

A brother and sister team are training for an epic triple challenge in aid of Bluebell Wood.

Lizzie and Rob Fraser, from Denby Dale, are planning to walk the 108-kilometre Isle of Wight coastal path, cycle 250 kilometres from London to Paris on a tandem and relay swim the 37-kilometre length of Loch Ness in the next 12 months. They are aiming to complete each challenge within 24 hours.

Lizzie (18) who is taking her A levels this summer and Rob (20), who is in his second year at Lancaster University, decided to fundraise for Bluebell Wood after Lizzie’s experience volunteering with the care team.

Lizzie said: “I’ve volunteered at events for families at Bluebell Wood, such as the Christmas party, a Harry Potter day and an Easter Egg hunt. It’s great seeing the children in such a relaxed, informal and welcoming environment, having such a good time. Being able to help out, make drinks for the parents or play with the children is incredibly rewarding. I know the money we raise will go to great use helping Bluebell Wood families.

“Rob and I wanted challenges that would be mentally and physically challenging, and push us to our limits. We’re both sporty people but we’ve never done anything as extreme as this before. We’ve joined a local outdoor swimming club, stepped up our work in the gym and we’re looking for a personal trainer to give us exercise and nutrition advice.

“Rob had raised over £2,000 for another charity in 2012, cycling on a tandem bike from Lands End to John O’Groats with our brother Al. He really enjoyed the challenge and was keen to take on another adventure for charity.

“We’re both pretty comfortable with walking and cycling, but open water swimming is completely new to us, and will probably be the most challenging. We recently did our first outdoor swim at Harthill Reservoir with water temperatures at 7.5 degrees. Neither of us will forget that experience.”

Lucy Rathbone, Community Fundraiser, Bluebell Wood, said: “This is one huge challenge that Lizzie and Rob are taking on, but we are sure they’ll fly through it. Every penny they raise will make a real difference to our families and help us offer the services they need, from arts and crafts and music therapy to counselling, sibling support groups and end of life treatment and care.”
