A North Lincolnshire woman is set for an amazing multi-coloured experience to raise funds for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.
Maxine Strong from Epworth will be joining thousands of other people to walk, jog, run or skip through five colour stations at the 5k Bluebell Wood Colour Dash at Rother Valley Country Park on 29 April 2017.
Maxine is running in memory of her son Lex, who passed away at Bluebell Wood in 2013 when he was just seven years old after being diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a childhood cancer.
“In December 2012 we were told about Bluebell Wood by a Consultant at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. We were apprehensive at first and very upset. Hospice is a very frightening word. The reality of looking for somewhere for your child to die when you have battled for so long and always carried hope is heart-breaking. But the reality was that Bluebell Wood could offer us something no one else could, which was the chance to be parents. I could just be a mum again, not a nurse or carer.
“Bluebell Wood is a very special place. I know for some of us it’s where you say goodbye to loved ones and for others it’s for care, but I always feel warmth and love whenever I go back. Special people who care and want to help take your pain away, that’s what it means to me. Alexander battled for over three years and I know he was happy when he was there too. I continue to visit and fundraise and always in a positive manner as my inspirational son would want.”
Since Bluebell Wood’s first Colour Dash in 2014, over 8,000 people have completed the colourful course to raise money for local children and their families.
Bluebell Wood provides care and support for children and young adults with life-shortening and life-threatening conditions across South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire, North Nottinghamshire and parts of North Lincolnshire. This includes end of life care, short breaks, music therapy, counselling, sibling support, home visits and more.
Colour Dash tickets are £18 for adults, £9.50 for children and £49 for a family of four. Children under five enter free-of-charge. Team tickets are also available at £15pp (eight adults or more per team). Free car parking on the day is now offered with all ticket purchases, saving £5.00 per car.
