A couple who took on the UK’s highest tandem skydive for Bluebell Wood are urging others to do the same this September.
Adam Ellmer and Samantha Baker, who each jumped from a plane at 15,000 feet, have supported us since their son Harrison came here for what they believed would be end of life care.
In 2013, at just three-weeks-old, Harrison contracted meningitis and was rushed into hospital. After a few days, Samantha and Adam were told by doctors that nothing more could be done for him. They decided to move to Bluebell Wood to spend their final, precious days with Harrison together, surrounded by family and friends.
However, the family and staff were amazed when the nurse removed Harrison’s ventilator and he continued breathing. Harrison was discharged from Bluebell Wood a few months later and is now an active, sociable five-year-old boy.
Adam said: “Sam and I decided to skydive for Bluebell Wood because it’s so close to our hearts. The care and attention given by the team was amazing. Nothing was too much trouble. Harrison is now a very happy five-year-old.
“The skydive was an absolutely amazing experience and I would definitely do it again. I wanted to go straight back up once I had landed. The thought of it is nerve racking, but the feeling you get once you’re in the plane, fastened to your tandem partner and ready to jump is great. When you’re actually out of the plane and diving, it is absolutely fantastic. Words cannot describe it.
“I hope lots of people sign up for the next tandem skydive. Not only will they have an incredible time but they will be helping Bluebell Wood, which relies on fundraising to keep its doors open for families like ours.”
Rachel Hodges, Senior Events Fundraiser, Bluebell Wood, said: “A skydive is one of life’s most thrilling adventures, and a must for anyone who wants to see the world from a whole new angle. We’re so grateful to Adam, Samantha and all our other skydivers who are willing to feel the fear and do it anyway for Bluebell Wood.
“There are still several places left on our next tandem skydive at Hibaldstow Airfield on 9 September, so anyone who is interested in taking it on should get in touch.”
