Beighton dad and hospice volunteer Steve Knight is busy organising the first ever ‘Scooter Fest’ in memory of his daughter Emma to raise funds for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice where she spent her last days.

Steve and his wife Jane, who is now a Support Worker at the hospice, have supported Bluebell Wood since their daughter passed away in 2008, and since then they have raised over £100,000 for the hospice.

Jane said, “Emma was diagnosed with a rare brain tumour in 2004 and over the next four years she lost her sight and her ability to walk. Despite all this, she was always a very happy, bubbly girl and was always smiling. Emma passed away at home in June 2008, but we were able to take her to Bluebell Wood’s Forget-Me-Not Suite, where we had more time to say goodbye.”

The hospice supports around 300 children and young adults with life-shortening and life-threatening conditions; and their families. It costs £4 million to offer these services each year, and the hospice only receives 10% of their funding from the government.

The scooter fest – a mini music festival called Beighton Rocks (a take on the famed Brighton Rocks) - takes place on Bank Holiday Sunday, May 26 at Beighton Welfare Grounds from midday. It is expected to bring hundreds of scooter fans to Beighton and raise thousands for the charity.

There will be nine local bands playing at the event, which will be taking place at Beighton Welfare Grounds from midday.

Steve said, “We’ve organised a number of fundraisers at Beighton Welfare Recreation Club over the years including comedy nights, concerts and themed nights, with the help of Jill Roberts, manager of the club. This time we decided to think big and organise a festival, and it has snowballed. The festival will be staged on the club’s football pitches and we could have up to a thousand turning up, many with their scooters. We do all of this for Emma, and to help other families who come to Bluebell Wood, facing what we had to.”

Beighton Rocks runs from 12pm until late. Tickets are £8 in advance from the club, or £10 on the day (under 14s half price).
