A big-hearted local mum has shed her flowing silver locks for a close-cropped purple style after shaving her hair for Bluebell Wood.

The brave mum and grandma, from Doncaster, even broadcast the radical transformation live to family, friends and supporters, smashing her fundraising target in the process.

Initially aiming to raise £500, Andrea Lilly’s total is just short of £900 after husband Ivan took the clippers to her locks on June 6th. Having never shaved her head before, it was uncharted territory for the fearless fundraiser.

“I wish I’d picked a warmer weekend,” said Andrea, 52, who has supported Bluebell Wood for a number of years.

“I’m still having to pull the duvet over my head to keep my head warm! But it was a great day and it was fantastic to see everyone and watch their facial expressions as it happened.”

Andrea decided to take the drastic step after becoming frustrated at the lack of hairdressing options.

“In lockdown, none of us can go to the hairdressers and my hair was getting to the point where it was out of control,” she said.

“I was also aware that Bluebell Wood have had to cancel many of their fundraising events, such as the Dragon Boat Race my former employer Pacy and Wheatley took part in.

“I visited the hospice a few years ago through my job and saw their wonderful work for myself so I really wanted to do something to help.”

Andrea’s already had plenty of praise for her eye-catching new look, as well as her bravery.

“Everyone’s been really complimentary and I’ve had lots of lovely messages. I’ve got plenty of other colours too so I think I’ll be changing it each week to keep people on their toes!”

Sally Baker, Community Fundraising Manager at Bluebell Wood, said: “Andrea really has gone above and beyond for Bluebell Wood – and her new hairstyle looks fabulous!

“It’s such a brave thing to do and we can’t thank her enough for all she’s done to support local children and families at a time when they need our help more than ever.”
