A 22-year-old from Sheffield has found her first permanent job, thanks to volunteering with Bluebell Wood.

Lucy Holland, who lives in South Anston, has gained valuable catering experience by helping out in our kitchen two days a week. She is about to start a new full time role as a catering assistant at Waterside Grange Care Home.

Lucy said: “I applied to volunteer at Bluebell Wood because I wanted to do my bit for children and young adults. I really enjoyed working in the kitchen and felt honoured to be able to do something for the families that visit the hospice.

“I think the experience definitely helped me find my new job and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to do something for others and learn a lot of useful skills at the same time.”

Volunteers are an important part of the running of Bluebell Wood, which has The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service and is accredited with the Rotherham Volunteer Kitemark Plus.

Terry Lowell, Volunteer Coordinator, said: “Volunteers like Lucy make all the difference at Bluebell Wood because they do so much to help in the day to day running of our hospice, as well as out in the community, in our shops and at events. We wouldn’t be able to do what we do without them. However, it’s also great to see our volunteers develop their careers as a result of their experience with us.

“We offer great volunteering opportunities at Bluebell Wood, from working in one of our charity shops or holding buckets at events to lending a hand in our kitchen or helping our housekeeping team. I always tell anyone to give it a go as it really makes a difference for our families, and you never know where it may lead.”
