Nurse Susan Fidment joined the extended Bluebell Wood family in 2021 after a long and varied career in the NHS that ultimately led her away from her passion of working closely with children.

Starting out as a children’s nurse, Sue went on to work in the Paediatric Critical Care Unit at Sheffield Children’s Hospital and then spent eight years at Sheffield Hallam University teaching children’s nursing.

“I really missed being a ‘hands-on’ children’s nurse, and decided I wanted to get back to working with children and families,” said Sue.

“I had heard about the great things that go on at Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, so I decided to go for it.”

While she may be new to the role, Sue’s passion for helping children and families make the most of every moment is plain to see.

“It’s a privilege to be able to care for the children who come to Bluebell Wood, who all have very individual needs. It’s lovely to be able to fill a child’s day with fun and laughter, where possible.

“It makes it a very different job to working in a typical NHS hospital setting.”

With nurse recruitment ongoing at the South Yorkshire charity, Sue says it’s the perfect role for those who want to make a real difference.

“Bluebell Wood really is a very special place. So, if you want a role which positively impacts children and families’ lives, while working with an amazing team of people, then this could be just the job for you.”
