At Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice, we often see the incredible strength of the families we support. One of those families is Katy Miller's from Goldthorpe, whose son Oscar's short life continues to have a lasting impact in ways she could never have imagined.

After losing Oscar shortly after his birth in 2020, Katy has gone on to train as a nurse and is now working on the Surgical Assessment Ward at Doncaster Royal Infirmary. She says the care and compassion her family received from Bluebell Wood helped inspire her decision to pursue a career dedicated to supporting others through difficult times.

During her pregnancy, Katy and her family learned that Oscar had Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), meaning he had only half a functioning heart, alongside other life-limiting conditions. Despite the devastating diagnosis, the family was determined to make every moment count.

Instead of holding a traditional baby shower, they organised a fundraising colour throw and raised thousands of pounds for Bluebell Wood.

Plans were originally in place for Oscar to receive end-of-life care at the hospice. Tragically, after being born in November 2020, Oscar died within just an hour.

Although everything changed in an instant, our community team quickly adapted plans so that Oscar could be taken home, allowing his family precious time together.

"Staff from Bluebell Wood were waiting for us at home when we returned from hospital with all the equipment set up," said Katy. "It was such a painful time, but so heart-warming and reassuring to have them on hand as soon as we arrived. Without that support, there's no way we could have brought him home."

Bluebell Wood was able to provide the family with a cold cot, enabling them to spend three invaluable days with Oscar. During that time, his sisters, Maeva and Emmy, were able to meet him, and other family members had the opportunity to say goodbye.

The family also received memory-making support, sibling support and bereavement care.

"To have that option at the worst time in your life and to be given the chance to make those precious memories you'll never get again was absolutely crucial to us," said Katy.

"Bluebell Wood became a source of comfort, dignity and compassion for the whole family."

"It wasn't just about end-of-life care – it was about enabling us to be together as a family, without judgement or pressure. It gave us space to focus entirely on Oscar and on each other."

Katy says the experience left a lasting impression on her and ultimately helped shape the path she would take in life.

She went on to study adult nursing at the University of Sheffield before securing her current role at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

"There wasn't one single moment, but over time, I saw the calmness and strength the staff at Bluebell Wood showed, and it made me think that I want to be able to offer that to someone else one day," she said.

"My experience gave me a deep understanding of how important vulnerability, grief and communication are in nursing. It's made me more reflective and more aware of the emotional impact behind clinical situations.

"It showed me what truly compassionate care looks like and set the foundation for the kind of nurse I want to be."

Reflecting on the support her family received, Katy added: "To those who cared for us at Bluebell Wood, I would like to say thank you for the dignity, kindness and humanity they showed during the hardest time of our lives. Their care had a lasting impact far beyond what you may ever see, and Oscar's life will always be part of their story."

Sarah Duffy, our Head of Family Support, said: "We are incredibly grateful to Katy for sharing Oscar's story and for helping others understand the support Bluebell Wood provides to families facing the most difficult circumstances.

"Katy's strength, resilience and determination to re-train and give back to her community in Oscar's memory are truly inspiring. She should feel immensely proud of everything she has achieved, her courage and commitment are making a real and meaningful difference.

Oscar's legacy continues to shine through his family and from everyone at Bluebell Wood, we'd like to thank Katy for sharing her story.
