Phoenix Squad began supporting Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice since May 4th 2025 and have since raised an incredible £10,299.19.

Phoenix Squad visited the hospice on Sunday 7 June for a cheque presentation to celebrate their final total.

They were greeted with Bluebell Wood’s Youth Group, a hospice group for older children supported by Bluebell Wood and their families.

Phoenix Squad spokesperson said: "Phoenix Squad are proud of all our members who utilise their spare time to bring the magic of the Galaxy to Yorkshire, and thanks to the incredible compassion of the communities we visit we have been able to raise funds for Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice"

Q: Tell us more about Phoenix Squad, how many people take part, what you do and how long have you done it for?

  • A: Phoenix Squad started in early 2024 with a desire to continue doing charity work, after another costuming group stopped, we now have many venues and events we attend, where we bring the magic of the Galaxy and information about our chosen charity to the community.

Q: What inspired Phoenix Squad to choose Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice as a charity to support?

  • A: Each year we ask our members to suggest charities they would like to support, we then shortlist them based on the charities receiving little to no government funding, and we try to prioritise children's charities and those who could benefit from more awareness, Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice ticked all our boxes.

Q: Had any members of your group had previous connections to Bluebell Wood or its work?

  • A: Two of our members have raised money for Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice previously.

Q: Why is supporting a children’s hospice important to your team?

  • A: Anyone who has a terminal illness deserves care and support, but Children are at a critical age range where their lives are impacted exponentially and should that life be shorter than most, then it is better that they have the best care, support and councilling that is on offer.

Q: Over the past year, what activities and events have you taken part in to support Bluebell Wood?

  • A: We have been extremely lucky to have been allowed to troop at venues such as White Rose Shopping Centre and Lakeside Shopping Village, plus we have taken part in Hornsea Carnival, Bridlington Comic Con and many other fairs, comic cons and events.

Q: Can you describe what you do at events when you’re in costume?

  • A: Our characters bring the magic of Star Wars to both children and adults, we do Jedi & Sith Training, Shoot the Trooper and other activities, along with photo opportunities with a variety of characters.

Q: You’ve raised over £10,000, how does that achievement feel?

  • A: It is a proud feeling that our efforts have raised so much and we hope it helps Bluebell Wood.

Q: What difference do you hope this money will make for the children and families at Bluebell Wood?

  • A: We hope it will provide children, siblings and families the care and support they need whether it is therapy, counseling or bereavement support.

Q: How do people typically respond when they see you fundraising in costume?

  • A: It is an amazing feeling when you see the wide eyes of children who see our characters in real life, plus adults who experienced the original film back in 1977, you can see that child from back then come to the surface.

Q: Do you find that dressing as popular characters helps start conversations about the hospice?

  • A: Most definitely, because our main audience is children we are able to discuss the charity with their families. We have also had enquiries about Bluebell Woods services for their own child or child of their friend.

Q: What has been your favourite moment or highlight from supporting Bluebell Wood this year?

  • A: Every single experience has its own highlight, from being on the stage at Comic Cons to seeing the excitement from a wheel chair bound girl who did our Jedi Training. Also when you see an adult encouraging the children over, when really it's then that want the photos.

Q: Is there a particular event that stands out as especially meaningful or successful?

  • A: For us the ones that stand out are when the parents of children say "it's made our/their day" whether that's because they love star wars or they have additional needs and they've been accepted to take part and be part of the magic.

Q: How would you encourage others to get involved in fundraising or supporting local charities?

  • A: Join Phoenix Squad lol but if they don't want to do that then find a local community group, make friends, raise money, get the word out about the charity they are raising for and have fun.

Q: How can people continue to support you?

  • A: Attend the events we are at which can be found on our Facebook events page or donate to us or the charity we're supporting.
