Teams ready to make a splash at Bluebell Wood’s Dragon Boat Race The countdown is officially on for one of Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice’s most oar-some events of the year as teams prepare to battle it out at the 2026 Dragon Boat Race! Taking place at Manvers Lake on Saturday 11 July, the much-loved event will once again see businesses, community groups and supporters paddle their hearts out to raise vital funds for local children and families supported by Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. Among this year’s fantastic fleet are returning fan favourites Wathletico Women’s FC, headline sponsors E.ON, and dedicated corporate supporters HW Martin - all ready to row, raise funds and have a splashing good time. Wathletico Women’s FC aiming for glory Returning for their fourth consecutive year, Wathletico Women’s FC are back with their trademark competitive spirit and plenty of girl power. The determined all-female crew have powered their way to the semi-finals every single year and now have their sights firmly set on going all the way. The team said: “We look forward to it every year, not just because it’s for an amazing charity and worthy cause, but because it’s such a fun day.” While swapping football boots for paddles might seem like a challenge, the team say the same teamwork, determination and energy help drive them forward on the water. In fact, a few teammates loved the sport so much they’ve since taken up paddling regularly! E.ON back on board as headline sponsor Returning as headline sponsors for another year, E.ON are once again helping power this fantastic event while also entering their own team into the race. The company has become a hugely valued supporter of Bluebell Wood, backing projects including the hospice’s Christmas Tree Recycling campaign as well as supporting the Dragon Boat Race year after year. Jess Dhariwal, Plant Manager at E.ON’s Blackburn Meadows biomass energy plant, said: “We’re proud to sponsor Bluebell Wood’s Dragon Boat Race once again this year and it’s fantastic to have our own colleagues participating too. “Supporting communities near Blackburn Meadows is important to us. This event brings people together for a fun family day while raising funds for an important and worthwhile cause. Good luck to all teams involved - we’re excited to be taking part.” HW Martin continuing to go the extra mile HW Martin Waste Ltd will be taking to the water for their first-ever Bluebell Wood Dragon Boat Race this year, with a team made up of Directors, Senior Managers and Operational staff from sites across Leeds, Rotherham and Derbyshire. While some team members have previous dragon boat experience, for many it will be their first time in a boat, bringing a mix of excitement and nerves ahead of race day. The team says the event is all about bringing colleagues together outside of work while supporting an important local cause. Long-time supporters of Bluebell Wood, HW Martin Waste Ltd has previously raised more than £6,000 for the hospice through fundraising activities and volunteering, including sponsored hikes, Christmas tree collections and even promoting the Dragon Boat Race around the local area for the last few years. Alongside fundraising efforts and raffle ticket sales, they’re also encouraging colleagues, friends and family to come along and enjoy the family-fun atmosphere on the day. HW Martin's Social Value's Manager, Stacey, says: "Please come along, any support for inexperienced teams like ours will boost our morale. It’s going to be a great family fun day – we can’t wait! And at the end of the day the aim is to raise vital funds for the hospice, fun and fundraising perfect combo!" Their support is a brilliant showcase of how local businesses can make a real difference - not only through fundraising, but by donating their time and energy to support fundraising activities throughout the year. Bluebell Wood's Chief Executive, Heidi Hawkins, said: “We’re thrilled to welcome many of our valued corporate supporters to the water this summer for our ninth annual Bluebell Wood Dragon Boat Race. “This event has become one of the highlights of our fundraising calendar, and is always such a joyful, energising day for everyone involved.” Come along and cheer them on! So how can you support us too? Head down to Manvers Lake to soak up the atmosphere, cheer on the teams and enjoy a fantastic family day out filled with excitement both on and off the water. With plenty of cheering, fundraising and friendly competition, it’s set to be another fin-tastic day for everyone involved. 📍 Manvers Lake, Wath Upon Dearne📅 Saturday 11 July 2026, first boats set off at 10am! 🎉 Free entry for spectators Manage Cookie Preferences
