An old Wendy house has been transformed into a tranquil refuge from the scorching summer sun at Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice – just in time for Beach Day.

The radical DIY SOS-style transformation saw a team of dedicated volunteers from Keepmoat Homes roll up their sleeves and turn the old Wendy house into a brightly coloured beach hut.

The hut, which was officially unveiled on one of the hottest days of the year, proved a huge hit on Beach Day where the seaside was brought to those families who might not be able to make it to the coast.

The fun-filled day saw an array of seaside attractions set up around the grounds, topped off with ice creams to keep the children cool.

Debbie Waddington, HR Director from Doncaster-based Keepmoat Homes said: “We always love working with Bluebell Wood so this was a brilliant project for our team of volunteers to give something back to the community.

“To see families enjoying our handiwork on a beautiful summer’s day really is the icing on the cake.”

The Keepmoat Homes team worked against the clock and managed get the makeover done and dusted within a day.

Gemma Robinson, Bluebell Wood’s Corporate Volunteer Coordinator, said: “We were all amazed at the stunning transformation in such a short space of time and it’s all thanks to the team of volunteers who I know put so much into this project.

“It really is testament to their hard work and determination and I know our families will enjoy it for years to come.

“A huge thank you to Keepmoat and also to Stacey’s Rainbow Faces, Center Parcs UK, Mansfield Sand Sport Services and Tony’s Ice Creams for helping to make so many wonderful Beach Day memories for our families.”

Rudi Else, 3, who is supported by Bluebell Wood, enjoyed the day and was on-hand to cut the ribbon and declare the beach hut officially open.

Mum Daniella Else said: “Beach day at Bluebell wood was amazing - sand castles, paddling pools, kid’s crafts and activities, fish and chips, ice cream and a visit from the firefighters! Rudi and the rest of us loved the day! All the best bits of being at the seaside without all of the hassle! The new beach house is beautiful, a little play house for the young ones and a retreat for older ones! A great addition to an already fabulous garden.”
