Bluebell Wood supporters put their paddle power into action once again for the hospice’s annual Dragon Boat Race and Family Fun Day.

Teams across the region raced across the choppy waters of Manvers Lake on Saturday, 8th July, in a splash-tastic fundraising effort.

Rowers battling it out to cross the lake in the fastest time had more than one challenge to contend with as heavy downpours threatened their attempts to claim victory.

However, the teams’ fundraising enthusiasm and training efforts in the months beforehand saw them take on the race with passion and determination.

In a nail-biting finale, reigning champions Crossfit Rotherham snatched victory by a mere half-second.

Runners up – and the top fundraising team - was Inzpire Limited, followed by Next - Dearne Valley Dragons in third place.

The popular event also included an array of games, activities, stalls and attractions for children and families.

Edward Tidmarsh is supported by Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and attended the event with his parents, Heather and Kevin, and sister Jessica.

They were accompanied by members of the hospice’s Care Team and had a brilliant time despite the weather.

Heather said: “The Care Team were amazing and had planned a picnic for us and a few treats too.

“The weather meant it was an adventure, but we had a brilliant time.”

Beth Cole, Events Fundraiser at Bluebell Wood, said: “We’re so grateful to everyone who came along to our event despite the weather.

“Taking on Manvers Lake in the rain was no easy feat, but our Dragon Boat Race teams showed what they are made of and gave it their all for Bluebell Wood.

“I’m over the moon to announce that the rowers and everyone else who attended on the day helped us to raise more than £28,000.

“These funds will go towards helping the children and families who rely on Bluebell Wood.”

Bluebell Wood would also like to thank Manvers Lake and Dearne Valley Trust for hosting the event and Boohoo Group Plc for being the headline sponsors.
